The Burlingame Pet Parade was started in 2004 by a group of volunteers to promote community spirit. It is entirely supported by volunteers and community donations.

More than 1,800 spectators and 1,100 participants – our biggest crowd yet – turned out for the 14th annual Burlingame Pet Parade, which took place on September 23, 2017. The parade was led by Our Lady of Angeles Preschool. The parade marshal was Pickles, a 1-year-old Potbelly pig who volunteers with the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA as a therapy pig. Music was provided by the Burlingame High School Marching Band, the Los Trancos Woods Community Marching Band and the San Mateo Elks Concert Band.

Pickles the pig rides in a chauffeured classic Thunderbird with his owner, Maddie Johnson San Francisco, during his reign as the parade marshal at the 14th annual Burlingame Pet Parade on September 23. Pickles is a pet therapy pig that volunteers with the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA visiting retirement homes, hospitals and other facilities. Pickles is a solo ocean surfer and he has more than 11,500 followers on Instagram. His chauffeur is car owner Don Hamblin of Burlingame Auto Body.

AWARD WINNERS

GRAND PRIZE: The top prize went to a large African spurred tortoise named Rick who propelled himself a rainbow-colored skateboard. The 6-year-old tortoise is owned by Daiki Yamaguchi of Burlingame.

BEST SCHOOL FLOAT: McKinley School in Burlingame won top honors in the Best School Float contest for a float promoting the school’s Harvest Festival on Oct. 27-28. The float depicted a graveyard with a tombstone labeled “RIPDog Days of Summer.” It was guarded by Charlie, an 11-year-old Yorkshire terrier dressed as a vampire that belongs to the Bass family of Burlingame. Many McKinley families wearing Harvest Festival T-shirts accompanied the float.

SECOND PLACE SCHOOL FLOAT: Roosevelt School won second-place honors for its Chili Cook-off float advertising the 21st annual school fundraiser on Oct. 8. The float depicted a giant pot of chili with all the ingredients. It was designed by artist Justin Angelos with help from his daughter Quinn, a fifth grader at Roosevelt, and was accompanied by more than a dozen Roosevelt families.

MOST UNUSUAL ANIMAL: The top honor went to Mr. Big, a petite Polish dwarf rabbit owned by 11-year-old Mila Mulready and her 8-year-old sister Shea, who live in Burlingame.

BEST PET TRICK: Rocky, a 5-year-old Corgi Papillon dressed at Batman, won this category for being an energetic begger. He is owned by 13-year-old Josh Frojelin of San Carlos.

BEST DRESSED PET: The winner was Lei, a 3-year-old Rottweiler-Labrador dressed as a UPS man, complete with package. She was named after her owner, Lei Fesaitu, who posed as a UPS driver. They live in Burlingame.

MOST ORIGINAL FLOAT, GROUP OR WAGON (NON-SCHOOL CATEGORY): Beatrice Burke, dressed as a witch, and her husband David Greene, dressed as a flying monkey, won this category with their Wizard of Oz entry, which included three dogs: Toto, depicted by 4-year-old Fada, and two flying monkeys, 6-year-old Oscar and 2-year-old Sadie. Toto and Oscar are Portuguese Podengos and Sadie is a Schnauzer. The family lives in Burlingame.
