2014 Pet Parade

AWARD WINNERS

​

GRAND PRIZE: “Disney on Broadway” featuring Tania Mendoza of Redwood City as Snow White, Michelle Marquez of Newark as Dopey the Dwarf, Michelle’s son Isaiah (age 2-1/2) as Pinocchio, four Chihuahuas (as Woodie from “Toy Story,” Alice in Wonderland, Minnie Mouse and Donald Duck), an Australian Shepherd as a Disney guest, and other friends as Cruella De Ville and Dalmatians from “101 Dalmatians.” The Chihuahuas rode in a wagon decorated as a castle.

 

 

 

 

MOST UNUSUAL ANIMAL: Demi the hen,owned by Basha and Seraphee Beaulaurier of Burlingame, part of a “Tropical Island” float that included 2 parakeets, Molly (a Golden Lab) in a hula skirt and lei, sea snails and palm trees in a wagon.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

BEST DRESSED: Chewy, a 3 year old Pomeranian who carried a jockey on his back. He was accompanied by Francesca and Bianca and their mother Marie Ty of Burlingame.

MOST ORIGINAL GROUP: “Attack Cat” featuring Pops, a very large 5-year-old Maine Coon cat dressed to kill with a spiked collar in a cage with warning signs, accompanied by Dorian Alvarez of Burlingame (wearing a hard hat) and Kiley, Phoebe, Drew, Allie and Boran.

BEST PET TRICK: Archer, a 5-year-old therapy dog who works with the Peninsula Humane Society. He obeyed commands by Hannah Whiteside to lie down, roll over, sit and, when told to jump, leaped well over 3 feet in the air.

LOGISTICS OF THE PET PARADE

• The parade was led by children from Palcare preschool and child care center in Burlingame.

• Boy Scouts from Troop 156 posted American flags along the street early this morning.

• This year, for the first time, the Hope Walk introduced a fundraising component to the parade. Participants who wanted to help needy Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA animals receive medical care were encouraged to collect pledges.

• Every parade participant received a souvenir ribbon.

• Crowd counters counted 605 participants and 1,479 spectators.

 

SPECIAL ATTRACTIONS AT THE PARADE

• The Grand Marshals were the Beagle Brigade of the U.S. Customs Border Protection Unit, led by Detector Dog Skipper.

• The newly-formed Mid-Peninsula Dog Scouts of America troop marched in the parade.

• Unusual animals this year included a python, a hamster, chickens, sea snails, fish, frogs and a bearded dragon. Costumes at this year’s parade included a large group of adults, children and dogs dressed as Disney characters; a Harry Potter group named “Harry Poocher”; a Star Wars group complete with a canine Ewok and Star Wars theme music; and dogs dressed as ballerinas, farmers, a sailor, a cheerleader, a bumblebee, a lion, a hula dancer, Bambi, a gentleman in a tuxedo and top hat, a basketball player, a construction worker and a ladybug.

• Volunteers from the Burlingame Mothers’ Club and Art Attack provided face painting and art projects for children.

• Preston’s offered free chocolate-making tours.

• The Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA brought its adoption van.

 

BACKGROUND

• The parade was started in 2004 by a group of volunteers who wanted to promote community spirit and have a good time. There is no charge to participate and all entertainment is free.

• The Pet Parade is entirely supported by volunteers and community organizations.

• Brian Probst of the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA coordinated all the logistics and volunteers for the parade, while Scott Delucchi handled publicity. Our parade committee included Vice Mayor Terry Nagel and Councilmember Ann Keighran, Ross Bruce of the Broadway Merchants Association, Nicole Acquisti of the Burlingame Recreation Center, Rudy Horak, Jim Latimer of the Boy Scouts, photographer Meghan Eddy, Sgt. Jay Kiely of the Burlingame Police Department, Jeff Londer and Jennifer Pfaff. Jeff Tateosian was our parade announcer.

• The Burlingame High School Band and the Los Trancos Woods Marching Band marched in the parade. The San Mateo Elks Concert Band played before and after the parade.
